Harry Styles says ‘American Girls’ is about watching his friends get married

Harry Styles has shared more about the meaning behind the lyrics of ‘American Girls’, explaining that the song was largely inspired by watching his close friends get married.

Styles released his latest album, Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally, on Friday (6 March) and marked the launch by dropping ‘American Girls’ as a single alongside an action-packed music video.

In a recent interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, Styles discussed the inspiration behind each track on the record. He described the album’s “mission statement” as an attempt to capture an honest reflection of his inner world.

“The record for me is about how do I still have my experience while I’m playing it?” he explained. “It was like, what music do I have to make for me to be on stage feeling like I’m in the middle of the dance floor?”

Speaking about ‘American Girls’, he told Lowe: “It’s actually quite a lonely song in a lot of ways. I watched my three closest friends get married, and actually seeing them trust in something and risk something to find something truly fulfilling in a way that isn’t as like shiny and on paper as exciting.”
